Assam Introduces “Lakhpati Baideo” Scheme For 40 Lakh SHG Women
The Assam government launched the "Lakhpati Baideo" scheme yesterday. The scheme aims to allow 40 lakh members of self-help groups (SHGs) to become micro-entrepreneurs in rural areas. This scheme was introduced by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

After the initiative, the CM stated that the ambitious project intends to empower women workers to earn an annual income of ₹1 lakh. It will provide ₹35, 000 in financial help to 40 lakh women. Taking to his ‘X’ handle, he said, “The scheme will fulfill Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of building two crore ‘Lakhpati didis’ and we proudly unveil the new program, which will help 40 lakh women.”
He also stated that the ‘Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan’, implemented at an estimated cost of ₹4,000 crore, will offer every SHG worker ₹10,000 in the first year, ₹12,500 from the government, and another ₹12,500 from a bank loan (total 25,000) over the next 2 years.
He continued by saying that the welfare scheme will be part of Assam’s population control measures for the benefit of mothers and sisters in the state. Assam CM further mentioned that women have to fulfill three requirements in order to be eligible for the scheme.
Benefit recipients who fall under the general or OBC categories are limited to three children; beneficiaries who are members of scheduled castes or tribes are limited to four children.
