Arvind Kejriwal Defends Decision To Remain As Delhi CM Amidst Arrest Controversy
In response to mounting criticism over his decision to retain his position as Chief Minister of Delhi while incarcerated at Tihar Jail, Arvind Kejriwal asserted that his refusal to resign was a symbolic stand against what he deemed as dictatorial tactics employed by the BJP-led central government.
Addressing the media on Saturday, Kejriwal emphasized that his incarceration was a result of a fabricated case orchestrated by the BJP to undermine his government’s stability in Delhi.
Kejriwal’s defiance stemmed from his conviction that the BJP’s motive was to destabilize his government, recognizing the formidable strength of AAP in Delhi politics. He highlighted his past willingness to relinquish positions of power, citing his brief tenure of 49 days as CM during his initial stint and his resignation from the post of Income Tax Commissioner to serve the people of Delhi.
Rejecting calls for his resignation, Kejriwal drew parallels with former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren’s situation, opining that resignation would only serve the interests of those seeking to undermine democratic institutions. He advocated for governance from within jail, echoing sentiments of resilience against what he perceived as attempts to stifle democracy.
In a bold projection, Kejriwal predicted a decline in the NDA’s electoral fortunes, claiming that the coalition was poised to fall short of a majority in the upcoming elections. Asserting AAP’s integral role in shaping the future government, he pledged to prioritize Delhi’s quest for full statehood and expressed dissatisfaction with the current LG’s perceived allegiance to external interests.
Despite being granted interim bail to participate in election campaigning, Kejriwal faces an impending return to Tihar Jail on June 2. However, his resolve to continue governing from within confinement underscores his commitment to resist perceived authoritarian tactics while actively participating in the democratic process.
