South India’s first air-conditioned underground market, Palike Bazaar, officially opened in Bengaluru. Inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Vijayanagar MLA M. Krishnappa, this ₹13 crore market is a pioneering development, becoming the second of its kind in India after Delhi’s Palika Bazaar. Located in Vijayanagar, adjacent to the metro station and bus stand, it features central air conditioning with individual units for each of the 31 shops, each occupying about nine square meters.
Developed by Parichita Constructions, the project saw initial funding of ₹5 crore in 2017-2018 and an additional ₹8 crore in 2021-22. Though the first phase was completed in 2022, focus shifted to the second phase, obstructing the first phase’s entrance.
The market boasts eight entrances, 145 lights, two escalators, and one lift, alongside power transformers and fire extinguishers. The initiative aims to ease street congestion and accommodate vendors displaced by a high court order.
Siddaramaiah commended the project and suggested constructing similar markets in other Bengaluru areas to alleviate surface traffic and enhance public convenience.
