More than 52 people were killed and 64 were injured in attacks in a disputed region between Sudan and South Sudan. During the weekend, 52 people, including women and children, died in the Abyei region.
The disputed area of Abyei’s information minister, Bulis Koch, stated that on Saturday, armed youth from the Warrap state of South Sudan conducted raids into neighboring Abyei. Both nations claimed that young people with guns from opposing Dinka ethnic factions have been fighting over where to draw an administrative border in the oil-rich area.
The UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) claimed on Sunday that an attack on its headquarters in Agok town during the unrest resulted in the death of a ‘Ghanaian peacekeeper.’ Bulis Koch further stated that because of the current dire security situation at hand, which has created fears and panic, they have imposed a curfew.
Recent conflicts between opposing Dinka ethnic groupings in Abyei over the location of an administrative boundary that generates large amounts of tax revenue have escalated tensions. According to Bulis Koch, the attacks against the Dinkas and Nuers in Abyei were carried out by Warrap-based Dinka youth and the forces of a rebel leader from the Nuer ethnic group.
At a UNISFA base, hundreds of civilians are currently seeking refuge. The information minister for Warrap State, William Wol, announced that his government would work with the Abyei administration to conduct a joint probe after the fatal event.
