Kolkata Doctor’s Murder: Rahul Gandhi Raises Questions On Local Administration Ruled By TMC

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has raised serious questions about the handling of the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor in Kolkata by the hospital administration and local authorities. In a post on X, Gandhi condemned the gruesome incident and expressed concern over the attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim.
Gandhi stated that the incident has forced people to question the safety of doctors, even in places like medical colleges, and the effectiveness of strict laws introduced after the Nirbhaya case in preventing such crimes. He emphasized the need for every party and section of society to hold serious discussions and take concrete steps to address the increasing incidents of violence against women across the country.
The former Congress president expressed solidarity with the victim’s family and demanded that they receive justice at all costs, with the culprits receiving exemplary punishment. His comments come a day after his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, made a cautious statement on the matter.
The ongoing protests by junior doctors across West Bengal, which have affected healthcare services, have been pressing for a magisterial probe into the killing and the removal of senior officials from the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Calcutta High Court has ordered the transfer of the probe from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Preliminary autopsy reports have revealed that the victim was sexually assaulted before her murder, with indications of violence and injuries.
