Indonesia celebrated its 79th Independence Day on Saturday, August 17 in a grand manner across the country. Notably, the celebratins began in a grand manner in the new capital city of Nusantara, which is located on the island of Kalimantan, marking the first time the event is underway.
The event was led by President Joko Widodo, accompanied by the president-elect Prabowo Subianto, and a parallel ceremony took place at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta.
The National Police deployed more than 1,000 personnel, and the Indonesian Military deployed around 2,000 personnel in Nusantara to ensure the security of the celebrations.
As part of it, the entire country was adorned with red-and-white flags, with various games and events held in the days leading up to the celebrations.
It is known that Indonesia got its independence on August 17, 1945, after 350 years of Dutch regime. The Indepencne declaration was first made by Sukarno, who is the first president of Indonesia.
Notably, the Dutch colonial army and navy were unable to stop the Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies in March 1942, which ended Dutch colonial rule.
In fact, the Indonesian nationalist forces were under pressure to declare independence unilaterally, which culminated in the kidnapping of Sukarno and Hatta by some of Jakarta’s youth leaders.
