Three people were killed and more than 28 were injured after the two trains collided on Indonesia’s main island of Java this morning. Police officials said that the accident occurred at 6:30 a.m. local time (1130 GMT) near rice fields in Cicalengka in West Java province.
The officials also said that numerous train carriages were overturned. They also said that a train traveling from Surabaya, the capital of East Java province, to Bandung hit a commuter train heading to Padalarang from Cicalengka station.
A television video showed several carriages overturned or badly mangled and ambulances evacuating the injured. Train accidents are common on Indonesia’s aging railroad network, especially at crossings.
The national railway official further asserted that the accident happened about 500 meters (yards) from Cicalengka train station in West Java’s Bandung city. The main cause of the accident is awaited, and the investigation is underway. The officials continued to say that the injured people were shifted to a nearby hospital.
