The Ruang volcano in the region has erupted many times, spewing ash and lava clouds into the sky for days, forcing at least 800 people to be evacuated from the province of North Sulawesi in Indonesia, the country’s volcanology service said on Wednesday. Almost 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Manado, the province seat, the volcano is situated on Ruang Island. Since Tuesday, it has erupted more than three times. Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari, an official at Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), said that as a result of the increased activity, authorities have elevated the warning level to the second highest level.
The mountain was erupting dangerous and “explosive hot clouds” as high as 1.8 km (1.1 miles) into the sky, she claimed, adding that the eruption was caused by recent earthquakes that occurred on the island. We think there might be further eruptions, so we need to clear the island.” Four kilometers around the crater are off-limits for any kind of activity, she declared. Reportedly, footage from the site showed gray ash clouds soaring above the crater and red lava flows cascading down the mountain, mirrored in the surrounding waterways. According to Heruningtyas, there are roughly 838 people living on Ruang Island, the majority of whom have since been evacuated to Tagulandang, the closest island.
