Exploring ‘Alaska Triangle’: The Mystery Behind Over 20,000 Disappearances
The Alaska Triangle, similar to the Bermuda Triangle, is known for unexplained disappearances. Spanning Anchorage, Juneau, and Utqiagvik, it has recorded over 20,000 missing person cases.
The Alaska Triangle, similar to the Bermuda Triangle, is known for unexplained disappearances. Spanning Anchorage, Juneau, and Utqiagvik, it has recorded over 20,000 missing person cases. The area gained attention in 1972 when a plane carrying two U.S. politicians vanished en route from Anchorage to Juneau, sparking widespread mystery and conspiracy theories.
In 1972, U.S. House Majority Leader Thomas Hale Boggs Sr., Alaska Congressman Nick Begich, Begich’s aide Russell Brown, and pilot Don Jonz disappeared while flying from Anchorage to Juneau.
Despite a massive search, neither the plane nor the bodies were found. This sparked conspiracy theories, as Boggs, a member of the Warren Commission, reportedly disagreed with its conclusions on John F. Kennedy’s assassination.
Another notable case is that of Gary Frank Sotherden, a 25-year-old New Yorker who went hunting in Alaska’s wilderness in the mid-1970s and never returned. In 1997, a human skull was discovered along the Porcupine River, and DNA testing in 2022 confirmed it was Sotherden’s.
It’s believed he was likely killed by a bear. Various theories have been proposed to explain the disappearances in the Alaska Triangle. Some speculate that unusual magnetic activity or extraterrestrial visits could be responsible.
However, more straightforward explanations suggest that the area’s vast wilderness, filled with natural dangers, may be the main reason why many people have gone missing and remain unfound.
Like the Bermuda Triangle, the mystery of the Alaska Triangle may remain unsolved. According to IFLScience, the area is characterized by “untouched wilderness,” “rugged mountain ranges,” brutally cold weather, and an abundance of bears, all of which contribute to its treacherous nature and the high number of unexplained disappearances.
