Zimbabwe wicketkeeper Clive Madande set a new and unwanted record by conceding 42 byes in a Test innings against Ireland on Friday, marking the highest number of byes ever given away by a wicketkeeper in Test cricket. The 24-year-old, enduring a challenging debut, had also been dismissed for a duck on the first day of the match at Stormont. Madande’s record-breaking number of byes surpassed the previous record of 37, set by England’s Les Ames in 1934 during a Test against Australia at The Oval. The byes conceded by Madande were not solely due to his performance; he faced a series of deliveries from his bowlers that were either down the leg side or exhibited late swing after passing the bat, complicating his task behind the stumps.
Despite Zimbabwe’s initial advantage with a 210-run total, Ireland gained a 40-run lead in their first innings by scoring 250 runs. A crucial last-wicket partnership of 47 between Andy McBrine (28) and Matthew Humphreys (27 not out) contributed to Ireland’s total. At the end of the rain-affected second day, Zimbabwe was 12-0 in their second innings, trailing by 28 runs. Joylord Gumbie and Prince Masvaure batted out the final 15 minutes of play. Former Zimbabwe international Peter Moor was Ireland’s top scorer with 79, setting the record for the highest Test score by an Ireland opener. Moor’s innings fell just four runs short of his highest score, achieved while playing for Zimbabwe in 2018. Zimbabwe’s bowlers showed promise, with Tanaka Chivanga (3-39) taking his first three Test wickets in just his second match, and Blessing Muzarabani contributing with 3-53.
