Ireland is set to emulate the UK by banning ‘XL bully dogs’. The Irish Department of Rural and Community Development announced the ban, effective October this year, which prohibits the sale, donation, abandonment, and breeding of these dogs.
Ownership of XL bullies will also be forbidden from February 1, 2025, unless current owners obtain a “Certificate of Exemption.” Minister Heather Humphreys stated that the ban aims to safeguard public safety, citing several recent severe attacks involving XL bullies, including the tragic death of Nicole Morey in Limerick.
In March, Ms. Humphreys formed a group to investigate dog control matters, led by a former senior garda (Irish police officer). Taoiseach (Irish PM) Simon Harris has expressed support for a ban, emphasizing a “clear need” for government intervention on the issue.
In the UK, regulations surrounding XL bully dogs are indeed strict due to their classification as potentially dangerous dogs. Owners typically need to adhere to specific laws regarding their ownership, such as licensing requirements and ensuring they meet certain safety standards. These regulations aim to ensure public safety and responsible pet ownership.
