At least two people are feared trapped under the rubble following the collapse of a three-storey building in Shahbaz village, Navi Mumbai, on Saturday morning. The building, a G+3 structure with 13 flats, collapsed around 5 a.m. The local authorities, including the police, fire brigade, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are on-site conducting a rescue operation. Kailas Shinde, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Commissioner, reported that two individuals have been rescued from the debris and are currently hospitalized in stable condition. The building, which is approximately 10 years old, falls under the Belapur ward jurisdiction. Shinde mentioned that the investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing and that action will be taken against the building’s owner once the investigation is complete.
This incident follows a recent tragedy in Mumbai where an 80-year-old woman died and four others were injured when part of a balcony from a four-storey residential building, Rubinnisa Manzil, collapsed last Saturday. The collapse occurred around 11 a.m. on Sleater Road, near the Grant Road railway station. The fire brigade had responded to that incident, highlighting ongoing concerns about building safety in the region. The rescue operation at Shahbaz village is ongoing as teams continue to search for any additional trapped individuals and assess the extent of the damage. The collapse has prompted urgent calls for improved safety inspections and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
