Over 12 people were injured when a three-storey building on a hill’s slope collapsed in Kargil district, Ladakh, on Saturday. The collapse occurred at 3:30 am at Kabaddi Nallah after an earthmover working near the slope caused the ground to give way, according to officials.
According to officials, five of the twelve injured, including the earthmover’s driver, have been rescued from the debris. They have been hospitalized and are reported to be in stable condition.
Officials have ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident and have evacuated residents from nearby houses to safer locations. Officials reported that a rescue operation began immediately after the building collapse was reported.
The operation involved police, army personnel, and local volunteers. Police officials stated that most of the injured were tenants. Rescuers took approximately 3 hours to clear the debris and extract the earthmover’s driver from the heavily damaged machine cabin.
Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, and Kargil Deputy Commissioner Shrikant Balasaheb Suse supervised the rescue operation.
