The AP government authorities have issued a second emergency warning alert at the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada due to heightened flood flow.
The inflow and outflow at the barrage stand at 5,67,360 cusecs, with floodwaters being released into the sea through 70 crest gates. Officials have advised residents in low-lying areas, inland regions, and river basins to remain vigilant.
The Prakasam Barrage, located in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, is a crucial infrastructure for flood control and irrigation. Completed in 1957, it spans the Krishna River and connects Krishna and Guntur districts.
Named after the then Chief Minister, Sri Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu, the barrage serves as a key component in regulating river water flow and managing irrigation for the fertile delta region.
The structure features 70 crest gates that control the release of water, crucial for maintaining the balance between flood control and agricultural needs. Its role in supporting the local economy and agriculture highlights its significance to the region.
The barrage is pivotal in providing water for over 4 lakh acres of agricultural land in the Krishna basin. During heavy rains or floods, the barrage’s capacity to manage high inflows and outflows is tested, as seen in frequent emergency alerts.
