Several news channels in Andhra Pradesh have been taken off air following the recent Assembly and Parliamentary election results, sparking allegations of coercion and censorship by the ruling NDA government. YSRCP Rajya Sabha member S Niranjan Reddy has raised concerns with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), accusing the Andhra Pradesh Cable TV Operators Association of unlawfully blocking channels like TV9, NTV, 10TV, and Sakshi TV under pressure from the TDP-led government.
In a letter to TRAI, Reddy emphasized the gravity of the situation, describing the blockade as a blatant violation lacking legal justification or procedural compliance. These channels, known for their critical stance against the government, were allegedly targeted due to their perceived support for the opposition YSRCP.
The controversy underscores broader tensions between media freedom and political influence in the state. A local cable TV operator from the Godavari region, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the channels’ blockade, attributing the decision to higher management without consultation with operators. She noted that channels now airing, such as TV5, ABN Andhrajyothi, and ETV, were perceived as aligned with the ruling party’s interests.
The operator also highlighted past instances during the YSRCP regime where channels supportive of the TDP faced similar restrictions, suggesting a cyclic pattern of media suppression based on political affiliations. This move has drawn criticism from viewers and subscribers questioning the transparency and fairness of media access in the state.
YSRCP’s Reddy urged TRAI to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, urging protection for media independence and preventing undue governmental interference in broadcasting. Meanwhile, TDP spokesperson Jyotshna Tirunagari defended the party’s stance on media freedom, emphasizing their respect for constructive criticism and the role of journalism in society. She pointed out recent efforts by the opposition to reinstate access for previously barred channels in the state legislature, contrasting with what she described as previous censorship under the YSRCP administration.
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders await TRAI’s response to ensure a balanced approach to media governance and safeguarding democratic principles in Andhra Pradesh.
