An incident involving a driver who made racial statements against a passenger and told them to “go back to India” is being looked into by a ride-hailing firm in Singapore. The Straits Times reported on Friday that the unidentified passenger posted a description of the event and screenshots of their chat with the driver from the ride-hailing service Grab on the Instagram account’sgfollowsall’ on Thursday. The conversation commenced when the driver informed the passenger not to wait, citing nearby road construction as the reason he couldn’t make it to the pickup location.
The passenger then requested that, in the event that the latter did not show up, the driver cancel the trip. In response, the driver inquired as to whether the passenger was Indian. Then the driver yelled at the passenger, “Go back to India.” The traveler, who has spent ten years living and working in Singapore, branded the incident “blatant racism” and “totally uncalled for.” The Daily quoted the company’s spokesman as saying that it strongly opposes discriminatory conduct and rhetoric on its platform.
