The Congress government in Telangana, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has officially begun the process of issuing new ration cards, a long-awaited initiative for many families. A cabinet subcommittee, chaired by Civil Supplies Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, convened to establish provisional guidelines for eligibility.
The new guidelines set an annual income limit of Rs 1.5 lakh for rural households, which must also have less than 3.5 acres of wet land and 7.5 acres of dry land. For urban areas, the income threshold is set at Rs 2 lakh. The subcommittee aims to gather feedback from MPs, MLAs, and MLCs across all parties before finalizing these guidelines.
Minister Reddy emphasized the goal of ensuring that all eligible households receive new ration cards, stating, “We have framed provisional guidelines and will also take the opinions of all parties before finalizing them.” This initiative is particularly significant as it marks the first issuance of new ration cards in over a decade, following a period during which the previous government did not issue any new cards.
The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from low-income families, who have faced challenges accessing essential commodities. The government’s commitment to reintroducing ration cards is seen as a vital step in supporting economically disadvantaged communities in Telangana.
