The Election Commission of India began a 2-day conference today with the Chief Electoral Officers of all States and Union Territories to review preparedness for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The 2-day conference was led by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), senior ECHQ officials, and CEOs of all states. However, the conference began at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi today.
With just 5 months remaining for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, all political parties have already begun their poll campaign to reach out to voters. It is known that the Bharatiya Jantha Party (BJP) scripted history by winning a record 303 seats out of 542 seats in the Lok Sabha, whereas the Congress won only 52 seats in the 2019 general polls. With this result, Modi became the first non-Congress full-majority Prime Minister to be re-elected.
However, seat-sharing for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls remains a serious point of contention for members of the INDIA bloc. Meanwhile, the allocation of seats for the general polls is significant for the Congress party after the huge losses in the assembly polls in the key heartland states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan.
