Popular search engine platform Google has declared that it will be laying off hundreds of employees from its digital assistant, hardware, and engineering teams. Meanwhile, the massive layoffs will impact employees involved in the development of Google Assistant, a voice-activated technology, and those in the augmented reality hardware team. Google said that the layoffs were part of a set of reorganizations that were made in the normal course of business.
The official Google spokesperson stressed that in the latter half of 2023, many of our teams changed to improve efficiency and better align resources with our top product priorities. He also said that some teams are still implementing these organizational changes, which unfortunately involve job cuts worldwide. However, Google’s central engineering organization will also see job cuts.
The chief executive officer of Google, Sundar Pichai, has pushed the company since July 2022 to sharpen its focus and reduce expenses as global economic conditions deteriorated. Google has 1,82,000 employees as of September 30, 2023. Meanwhile, the affected employees have been notified and will have the chance to apply for other open positions within Google.
