Jay Shah Announces Efforts To Establish Special Fund For Test Cricket
Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), revealed that discussions are underway at the International Cricket Council (ICC) to establish a special fund for the future of Test cricket.
Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), revealed that discussions are underway at the International Cricket Council (ICC) to establish a special fund for the future of Test cricket. Shah, who is part of the ICC Finance and Commercial Affairs committee, highlighted the high costs associated with hosting Test matches and the need for financial support. If approved by the ICC Board, this fund would help ensure the continued viability of Test cricket.
Shah also noted India’s limited number of day-night tests, which often conclude within two days, leading to dissatisfaction among spectators and broadcasters. He expressed concern over the lack of refunds for tickets if matches end prematurely and stressed the emotional impact of such issues. Despite occasional quick finishes, Shah acknowledged that it is not a frequent problem and cannot be easily controlled.
Regarding a potential World Test Championship for women’s cricket, Shah stated that it would only be feasible if more countries began playing Test matches. Currently, apart from India, Australia, and England, few teams participate in Test cricket regularly. Shah also discussed the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL), noting its pros and cons and indicating that the BCCI will weigh all opinions before making decisions on future mega auctions.
