Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian opening batsman, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. He will succeed Rahul Dravid, whose tenure ended after India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign in 2024.
Gambhir, known for his exceptional batting prowess and strategic acumen, has been handed a long rope, with his appointment lasting until the end of 2027. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, Jay Shah, expressed confidence in Gambhir’s ability to steer Indian cricket forward, stating that his clear vision and vast experience position him perfectly for this exciting role.
The Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik, unanimously recommended Gambhir for the position after interviewing him and W.V. Raman. The BCCI has assured its full support to Gambhir as he embarks on this new journey.
Gambhir’s first assignment will be India’s limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka, starting at the end of July 2024. He will miss the services of senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah, who have been rested after the T20 World Cup victory.
The BCCI has also expressed its gratitude to Rahul Dravid for his outstanding service as head coach, during which the team achieved significant accomplishments, including winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and finishing as runners-up in the ICC 50-over World Cup 2023 and the ICC World Test Championship 2023.
Gambhir’s appointment marks a new chapter for Indian cricket, and the BCCI is confident that his leadership and mentorship qualities will bring out the best in the team.
