Jay Shah, currently serving as the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been elected unopposed as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on August 27, 2024. At 35 years old, he will become the youngest individual to lead the ICC, succeeding Greg Barclay, who opted not to seek a third term after his tenure began in 2020. Shah’s official term as ICC chair will commence on December 1, 2024.
The ICC had previously announced that elections for the chairmanship would only occur if multiple candidates were nominated. However, Shah emerged as the sole nominee, indicating strong support from various cricket boards, including those from England and Australia, which is crucial for securing the necessary majority.
Shah’s ascent to the ICC chair is viewed as a formality given the backing he has received, positioning him to join the ranks of notable Indian cricket leaders such as Jagmohan Dalmiya and Sharad Pawar. His leadership roles within the BCCI and the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs committee have further solidified his influence in the cricketing world.
As Shah prepares to transition to his new role, speculation arises regarding who will take over as BCCI secretary in his absence. Rohan Jaitley, the president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) and son of the late Arun Jaitley, is considered a leading candidate for the position.
