People Are Breathing In Cancer-Causing Chemicals In Their Cars: Study
According to recent studies, people who are in their cars are inhaling toxins that cause cancer. In the study, scientists examined the interior air quality of 101 gas, electric, and hybrid vehicles with model years ranging from 2015 to 2022.
According to recent studies, people who are in their cars are inhaling toxins that cause cancer. In the study, scientists examined the interior air quality of 101 gas, electric, and hybrid vehicles with model years ranging from 2015 to 2022.
The scientists found that 99% of cars contained a flame retardant called TCIPP, which is under investigation by the US National Toxicology Program as a potential carcinogen.
They also discovered that two more flame retardants, TCEP and TDCIPP, which are thought to cause cancer, were present in the majority of autos. There are also neurological and reproductive side effects associated with these flame retardants.
Rebecca Hoehn, lead researcher and toxicology scientist at Duke University, said that considering that every driver spends around one hour in their vehicle each day, this poses a serious threat to public health.
She added that since children breathe more air per unit of weight than adults do, it’s especially troubling for drivers who have longer drives. The study found that the summer months had the largest concentrations of dangerous flame retardants. because heat causes compounds in automobile components to leak more readily.
Seat foam is the source of the chemicals that cause cancer in the cabin air. The chemicals are added by automakers to seat foam and other materials in order to comply with an antiquated flammability regulation with no demonstrable advantage to fire safety.
Patrick Morrison, director of health, safety, and medicine for the International Association of Fire Fighters, said, “Firefighters are concerned that flame retardants contribute to their very high cancer rates.”
