The majestic Amrit Udyan has once again opened it’s gates for the public. This beautiful garden was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the British architect who also planned many structures in New Delhi. Its purpose is to create a space where humans can coexist in harmony with nature. The garden covers an area of 15 acres and is inspired by the gardens of Persia (now Iran), following the Charbagh structure. The garden will be accessible to the public from February 2 to March 31, under the Udyan Utsav-2024, which will be inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu.
The History Behind Amrit Udyan:
Amrit Udyan was once called “Mughal Gardens.” The Mughal Gardens were originally named after the colonial masters of India. But the Indian government renamed the gardens at the Rashtrapati Bhavan as “Amrit Udyan.” This was done as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, an initiative to get rid of the country’s colonial past. During the term of former presidents Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Ram Nath Kovind more gardens were developed, which included two herbal gardens, a tactile garden, and a bonsai garden. The renaming ceremony was held on January 28, 2023.
