In his inaugural speech as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha on July 1, 2024, Rahul Gandhi launched a broadside against the BJP-led NDA government. Gandhi’s address was marked by a vigorous critique of several government policies and practices, including issues surrounding Hinduism, the NEET-UG exam, the Agniveer recruitment scheme, and the treatment of farmers.
Critique on Hinduism:
Gandhi drew attention to the principles of non-violence espoused by various religions, criticizing the BJP for promoting violence under the guise of Hinduism. Holding up a portrait of Lord Shiva, he asserted that the BJP and its affiliates preach violence and hatred, contrasting it with the true essence of Hinduism which, he claimed, values peace and compassion. This statement ignited a significant uproar among the treasury benches. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were quick to respond. Modi deemed Gandhi’s remarks as a grave accusation against the entire Hindu community, while Shah demanded an apology, emphasizing that associating violence with Hinduism is inappropriate and offensive.
NEET-UG Paper Leak Allegations:
Gandhi also took aim at the NEET-UG examination, alleging that the system is skewed in favor of the wealthy. He criticized the exam for creating barriers for underprivileged students, suggesting it is designed to perpetuate a system that benefits the rich rather than ensuring meritocracy. Gandhi argued that students and their families invest considerable time and resources into preparing for NEET-UG, only to find that the system favors those with financial advantages. This criticism has resonated with many who feel that the current educational system does not adequately support disadvantaged students.
Concerns Over Agniveer Scheme:
The Congress leader’s speech also targeted the Agniveer recruitment scheme, which he labeled as a “use and throw” policy. Gandhi highlighted a recent incident where an Agniveer, who died in a landmine blast, was not honored as a martyr. He contended that the scheme exploits soldiers by treating them as expendable rather than valuing their service. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh countered this claim by asserting that the families of Agniveers who sacrifice their lives receive substantial financial support, amounting to Rs 1 crore, thus refuting Gandhi’s allegations.
Allegations of Constitutional Erosion:
Lastly, Gandhi accused the government of systematically undermining the Constitution and attacking individuals who oppose its policies. He argued that there is a concerted effort to suppress dissent and that those who resist the centralization of power and the marginalization of poor, Dalits, and minorities are being targeted. Gandhi described his own experiences, including extensive interrogation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), as evidence of this broader assault on democratic principles.
In response, the Prime Minister noted that democracy and the Constitution require respect for all positions, including the Leader of Opposition. The debate highlighted significant tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, reflecting ongoing political and ideological conflicts.
