In the early 1980s, a young Ali Khamenei visited India and was deeply moved by the death of a pregnant woman in remote Alipura village, Karnataka, who died en route to Bengaluru due to lack of nearby medical care. Angered by the tragedy, he funded the construction of a hospital there so locals wouldn’t face similar hardships again.
