On the occasion of the 78th Independence Day, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu officially launched the much-anticipated Anna Canteen initiative in Gudivada. This program aims to provide affordable meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—for just ₹5 to those in need. The Anna Canteens, which were a hallmark of Naidu’s previous administration from 2014 to 2019, had been discontinued by the YSRCP government but are now being reinstated to support the underprivileged.
During the launch event, CM Naidu emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating that it aims to alleviate hunger and ensure that no one goes hungry. The first Anna Canteen was inaugurated at Ramabrahmam Municipal Park in Gudivada, with plans to open a total of 203 canteens across the state. In the first phase, 100 canteens will begin operations starting August 16, with the remaining canteens set to open in subsequent phases.
The menu at Anna Canteens will feature nutritious and tasty options, including items like idly, upma, and pongal for breakfast, along with rice, curry, and sambar for lunch and dinner. The initiative is expected to serve approximately 1.05 lakh people daily, significantly impacting the lives of daily wage workers and low-income families.
Nara Bhuvaneshwari, the Chief Minister’s wife and Managing Trustee of the NTR Trust, was also present at the launch. She generously donated ₹1 crore to support the Anna Canteens initiative, reinforcing the commitment to the welfare of the poor. Bhuvaneshwari expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to a cause that aligns with the late N.T. Rama Rao’s vision of providing food, shelter, and clothing to the needy.
Minister for Municipal Administration, P. Narayana, highlighted the success of the original Anna Canteens, which served over 4.6 crore meals during their operation. He assured that the new canteens would be strategically located in urban and rural areas to maximize accessibility for those in need.
As the state government takes steps to revive this vital initiative, the Anna Canteens are poised to become a lifeline for many, ensuring that affordable and nutritious food is available to all, regardless of their economic situation.
