The recent unveiling of the YSR Congress Party’s manifesto for the upcoming elections has left many underwhelmed, with critics pointing out its lack of focus on critical developmental issues. Led by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the manifesto fell short of expectations, especially in terms of addressing infrastructure creation, job opportunities, and overall economic development.
During Jagan’s lengthy manifesto speech, which lasted one and a half hours, a mere fraction of the time was dedicated to discussing crucial matters like the development of the state’s infrastructure and the completion of major projects like Polavaram. This lack of emphasis on developmental issues has raised concerns about the party’s priorities.
Instead of outlining concrete plans for growth and progress, the manifesto primarily focused on the continuation and slight enhancement of existing welfare schemes. Disappointment ensued among voters as no new schemes were introduced, and even the enhancements to existing ones seemed to rely heavily on numerical manipulation.
One of the flagship schemes, the pension scheme, saw Jagan promising an increase from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 3,500 in two phases. However, this pales in comparison to Chandrababu Naidu’s announcement of a Rs. 4,000 pension with arrears from April, highlighting the disparity in vision between the two parties.
Similarly, under the Rythu Bharosa scheme, Jagan pledged to raise the annual payment from Rs. 13,500 to Rs. 16,000. Yet, scrutiny reveals that Jagan’s contribution remains lower than what was promised in the 2019 manifesto, casting doubt on the sincerity of the proposed enhancements.
Another key promise was the increase in the Amma Vodi scheme from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 17,000 annually. However, a closer examination reveals that this increase is offset by deductions for the Toilet Maintenance Fund and School Maintenance Fund, resulting in parents receiving the same amount as promised in the 2019 manifesto.
Comparatively, the manifesto failed to match the comprehensive offerings of Chandrababu Naidu’s “Super Six,” which includes initiatives like free RTC travel for women, three free gas cylinders, and a monthly unemployment allowance of Rs. 3,000. The anticipation now turns to the complete manifesto of the TDP+ alliance, set to be unveiled on the 30th of this month, which has the potential to alter the electoral landscape significantly.
