Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar refused jailed AAP leader Sanjay Singh’s oath as Rajya Sabha MP on Monday. Dhankhar stated that the issue was currently with the privileges committee. The Rajya Sabha’s privileges committee is looking into a violation of privilege charge against Singh.
The AAP nominated senior leader Sanjay Singh for a second term in the Rajya Sabha in January of last year. Singh was detained by ED agents in connection with a money laundering case involving the now-canceled Delhi excise policy. AAP has nominated chartered accountant Narain Das Gupta and former Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal to the Rajya Sabha in addition to Singh.
Sanjay Singh went to Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on February 1 and asked for temporary bail, allowing him to take his oath as a Rajya Sabha MP and attend the upcoming Parliament session from February 5 to February 9.
He subsequently modified his argument, though, and asked to be allowed to just take the oath in Parliament. Sanjay Singh was permitted to enter Parliament while being held by the police and take his oath as a Rajya Sabha member by the Delhi court, even though his judicial custody was extended till February 17.
