Deputy Chief Minister Konidela Pawan Kalyan announced that on August 23, gram sabhas will be held across 13,326 gram panchayats in the state to make decisions on development projects funded by the national employment guarantee scheme. The event, aimed at involving local communities, will oversee 87 types of works under the MGNREGS with a budget of ₹4,500 crore. The initiative plans to provide employment for 54 lakh families through 9 crore working days and is a joint effort of the Panchayat Raj and Rural Development departments.
Pawan Kalyan highlighted Andhra Pradesh’s pioneering role in adopting the Panchayat system three decades ago and noted ongoing surveys of water conditions in 22 lakh households, with plans to address issues based on the findings. He criticized the previous administration for underutilizing NREGA funds, stating that while ₹40,579 crore was allocated between 2019-2023, the panchayats’ income dropped from ₹240 crore to ₹170 crore.
The Deputy CM emphasized recognizing the unique aspects of each panchayat, such as Anandapuram flowers and Araku coffee, to boost local economies through exports and other initiatives. He urged greater participation from youth and women in gram sabhas to foster self-reliance and community development.
