Jay Shah Poised For ICC Chairman Role; BCCI Faces Search For New Secretary
Jay Shah is a strong contender to become the next ICC Chairman, with backing from 15 out of 16 ICC Board members, but he faces a tight deadline to decide whether to accept the role.
Jay Shah is a strong contender to become the next ICC Chairman, with backing from 15 out of 16 ICC Board members, but he faces a tight deadline to decide whether to accept the role. If Shah makes the move, which would take effect on December 1, BCCI must find a replacement for him as secretary, a position he is expected to vacate after his second consecutive term ends in October 2025, due to the mandatory cooling-off period.
Several potential candidates could step into Shah’s role, including:
Rajiv Shukla: The current BCCI vice president and Congress MP might be considered for a one-year term as secretary, given his experience and current position.
Ashish Shelar: The BCCI treasurer and Maharashtra BJP heavyweight, though he might be reluctant due to the role’s demands.
Arun Dhumal: The IPL Chairman, with significant board experience, could be a viable option, possibly swapping roles with Shukla.
Devajit ‘Lon’ Saikia: The joint secretary, though less prominent, might be elevated.
Younger administrators like DDCA President Rohan Jaitley, former CAB President Avishek Dalmiya, and other state officials such as Dilsher Khanna, Vipul Phadke, and Prabhtej Bhatia could also be considered. While it is possible for a new face to emerge, the BCCI’s power structure typically favors experienced candidates for key positions.
