Shivani Raja, of Indian origin, made history as the first Conservative MP to win the Leicester East seat in 37 years. Her victory on July 10 included a symbolic oath ceremony where she pledged her commitment to the UK Parliament using the Bhagavad Gita.
“It was a privilege to be sworn into Parliament today to represent Leicester East,” shared the Gujarati businesswoman in a social media post. “I was deeply honored to pledge my allegiance to His Majesty King Charles on the Gita.”
Ms. Raja’s oath-taking event received widespread acclaim online. Her win marked the end of the Labour Party’s long-standing hold on the constituency. The 29-year-old garnered 14,526 votes, surpassing Labor’s Rajesh Agrawal, who received 10,100 votes.
The election was fiercely contested, featuring prominent candidates like former MPs Claude Webbe and Keith Vaz running as independents. Reflecting on the road ahead, Ms. Raja emphasized, “It’s time for change, and Leicester is ready for that change.”
In the recent UK elections, the Labour Party secured 411 seats, while the Conservative Party won 121 seats. The Liberal Democrats gained 72 seats, and the Scottish National Party secured nine seats.
