In order to protect youth and the general public’s health, Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has declared a statewide ban on the sale and consumption of hookah in the state. He made these announcements through his official ‘X’ account.
In his social media post, Dinesh stated that statewide prohibition on hookah would safeguard children’s health. He took action decisively by banning hookah smoking throughout the state in light of the significant health concerns connected with it.
We are imposing a ban on hookah smoking in Karnataka by modifying the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) in response to this concern, the post stated. For the benefit of future generations, his administration is trying to create a safer and healthier environment, his post added.
Alarming figures from the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Adult Tobacco Survey-2016-17 (GATS-2) support this prompt action. It shows that 22.8% of adults in Karnataka use tobacco, with 8.8% of them being smokers.
It also shows that 23.9% of individuals in the state are exposed to secondhand smoke in public settings, indicating how common tobacco use is in the state.
