Polish President Andrzej Duda traveled to Kyiv on Saturday to join Ukraine in celebrating its 33rd Independence Day. Addressing the main celebrations at Sofia Square, Duda highlighted that Ukraine’s independence is crucial for the security and sovereignty of Central Europe, including Poland.
He recalled Poland’s historic role as the first country to officially recognize Ukraine’s independence in 1991 and its support for Ukraine’s pro-Western aspirations during events like the Orange Revolution and Euromaidan. Duda praised Ukraine for its steadfast defense against aggression over the past two years, emphasizing Poland’s ongoing support for Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty.
Duda’s visit came shortly after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s significant trip to Kyiv, where Modi discussed the Russia-Ukraine conflict with Duda. Upon arriving in Kyiv aboard ‘Rail Force One,’ Duda laid flowers at the Wall of Remembrance dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives for Ukraine.
This visit marks Duda’s third participation in Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations, having previously attended in 2016 and 2021. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed confidence that Ukrainians will continue to celebrate their independence in a free and sovereign state, underscoring the significance of the day for the nation’s resilience and future.
