Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay is likely to visit India on March 15, 2024. Interestingly, it is Tobgay’s first official foreign trip after his re-election. Recently, our Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra visited Bhutan and held talks over space, energy, trade, technology, and people-to-people ties between the two countries. In fact, Tobgay’s visit is very crucial against the backdrop of Bhutan’s economic challenges involving China.
It is known that India plays a significant role in Bhutan’s socio-economic development. India is also contributing significantly to Bhutan’s five-year plans and supporting over 600 projects in the country. Interestingly, Tobgay’s visit provides a golden opportunity for Bhutan to reaffirm its ties with India and discuss strategies to address its geopolitical challenges. In fact, India is literally Bhutan’s primary development partner.
Tobgay was actually a civil servant in his early days. He began his political career with the Technical and Vocational Education Section (TVES) of the Education Division in Bhutan in 1991. Meanwhile, Tobgay served as the director of the Human Resources department under the Ministry of Labour and Human Resources. However, Tobgay became the PM of Bhutan through a secret ballot in 2013.
