In a significant move to boost India’s industrial capabilities and economic growth, the Union Cabinet has approved an ambitious project to develop 12 new industrial smart cities across 10 states. Announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, this initiative is backed by an investment of ₹28,602 crore and aims to revolutionize the country’s manufacturing sector.
The new smart cities will be strategically located along six major industrial corridors, encompassing regions including Khurpia in Uttarakhand, Rajpura-Patiala in Punjab, Dighi in Maharashtra, Palakkad in Kerala, Agra and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, Gaya in Bihar, Zaheerabad in Telangana, Orvakal and Kopparthy in Andhra Pradesh, and Jodhpur-Pali in Rajasthan. These cities are designed to create a robust network of industrial nodes, expected to significantly enhance India’s global competitiveness and economic growth.
The project is set to generate around 10 lakh direct jobs and an additional 30 lakh indirect jobs, offering extensive employment opportunities. The smart cities will feature “plug-n-play” infrastructure and “walk-to-work” concepts, providing modern, efficient working environments.
With an estimated investment potential of ₹1.52 lakh crore, the initiative aims to cultivate a dynamic industrial ecosystem, attracting both large-scale industries and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The development of these industrial nodes is expected to play a crucial role in achieving the government’s goal of $2 trillion in exports by 2030, underlining India’s vision of becoming a self-reliant and globally competitive economic powerhouse.
