OpenAI announced its latest initiative to challenge Google’s dominance in the search engine market. The company behind ChatGPT unveiled a new prototype named “SearchGPT,” designed to leverage its advanced AI models to enhance online query responses. This new tool aims to integrate the strengths of OpenAI’s AI with up-to-date web information to deliver swift and relevant search results. SearchGPT is currently being tested with a select group of users and publishers for feedback. According to OpenAI, the prototype will feature conversational query capabilities, allowing users to interact as they would in a dialogue with a person and ask follow-up questions. This conversational aspect aims to create a more intuitive search experience.
The introduction of SearchGPT comes in response to Google’s recent addition of AI-generated query result summaries, known as “Overviews.” These Overviews appear at the top of search results, providing users with a concise summary of information before traditional links to websites. This change has raised concerns among some about its potential impact on ad revenue and the opportunities for generating income through search ads. SearchGPT appears to echo some elements of Google’s Overviews, suggesting a similar approach to summarizing information. Since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, there has been a rapid race among companies to deploy generative AI for creating text, images, and other content based on user prompts.
OpenAI is working closely with publishers to refine SearchGPT, ensuring it respects and supports journalism. Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, emphasized the importance of building technology that values and protects journalistic integrity, and expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with OpenAI on this initiative. In response, Google Chief Sundar Pichai noted during Alphabet’s recent earnings call that AI search is poised to be a critical component of how people navigate the internet, highlighting ongoing innovation in the AI sector. OpenAI has opened a waitlist for users interested in trying SearchGPT, signaling the company’s commitment to advancing AI technology across various applications.
