Lt Gen Sadhna Nair Becomes First Woman To Hold Key Medical Post In Armed Forces
Lt Gen Sadhna Saxena Nair on Thursday took charge as Director General Medical Services (Army), becoming the first woman appointed to this prestigious role.

Previously, she was the first woman to serve as Director General Hospital Services (Armed Forces) and was promoted to Air Marshal. Lt Gen Nair’s schooling included St Mary’s Convent in Prayagraj, Loreto Convent in Lucknow, and various schools in Tezpur, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, and Chandigarh.
Lt Gen Sadhna Saxena Nair graduated with distinction from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, and was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in December 1985.
She holds a postgraduate degree in family medicine, along with diplomas in maternal and child health and health care management. Additionally, she completed a two-year medical informatics training at AIIMS Delhi.
She is trained in CBRN warfare with the Israeli Defence Forces and military medical ethics with the Swiss Armed Forces in Spiez, Switzerland. Lt Gen Nair is the first woman to serve as Principal Medical Officer of both the Western Air Command and the Training Command of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
She was also appointed as an expert member of the Dr. K Kasturirangan Committee for the medical education component of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2019.
Her meritorious service has been recognized with the AOC-in-C (WAC) and Chief of the Air Staff Commendations, as well as the ‘Vishisht Seva Medal’ from the President of India.
