Nepal faces a new shift in power as KP Sharma Oli secures backing from 166 MPs following Pushp Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”‘s parliamentary trust vote loss. Formerly an ally, Oli had previously served two terms as PM and is now poised for his third term, marking a significant political development in the country.
Oli was born into a Bahun family, and he began his political career in 1966 in opposition to the partyless Panchayat system in place at the time. After that, he joined the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) in February 1970.
KP Sharma Oli was involved in subversive politics in Nepal and was arrested for the first time in 1970. He was imprisoned for 14 consecutive years, from 1973 to 1987, for being against the autocratic Panchayat system in Nepal.
Oli was released from prison in 1987, and later he became a central committee member of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist). He also served as the in-charge of the Lumbini zone until 1990.
He was elected to parliament again in 1994. He served as the Minister for Home Affairs in Manmohan Adhikari’s minority government, and he was re-elected in 1999.
Oli was married to Radhika Shakya, who is also a fellow communist, after he was released from prison.
