Since the Odisha rail tragedy last year, which resulted in over 290 fatalities, India has experienced numerous train derailments, including three significant passenger train accidents in the past six weeks, claiming 17 lives.
The latest incident occurred on Tuesday morning near Barabamboo in Jharkhand, where 18 coaches of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed, resulting in two deaths and over 20 injuries.
This adds to the ongoing safety concerns, as recent major accidents in June and July have left 17 dead and more than 100 injured. On June 17, two coaches of the Kanchanjunga Express derailed, causing 11 deaths and over 60 injuries.
According to officials, the collision near New Jalpaiguri occurred when a goods train ignored signals and collided with the Kanchanjunga Express, which was traveling from Agartala to Sealdah.
On July 18, eight coaches of a train derailed near Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda railway station, resulting in four deaths and over 35 injuries. Officials suspect that the derailment of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh train might be due to a possible attempt at track sabotage.
Finally, the July 30 accident involving the Howrah-Mumbai Mail is suspected to be a collision between the passenger train and a goods train. In the past month, these accidents shared common issues: either signaling failures or tracking safety problems.
