Former Indian Army chief General Sundararajan Padmanabhan passed away in Chennai a few minutes ago. General Padmanabhan retired in 2002 after a remarkable career that spanned 43 years.
He served as the 20th Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army from September 30, 2000, to December 31, 2002. He got several awards, including the Vishisht Seva Medal and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, for his dedicated service to the nation.
He was born on December 5, 1940, in Trivandrum, Kerala. He was an alumnus of the prestigious Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), located in Dehradun, and the National Defence Academy (NDA), located in the Khadakwasla area of Pune.

General Padmanabhan held several top command, staff, and instructional positions throughout his career. He commanded the Gazala Mountain Regiment, which is one of the oldest artillery regiments of the Indian Army.
He served as Instructor Gunnery at the School of Artillery in Deolali and also held the position of Brigade Major of an infantry brigade during its raising.
