In a major diplomatic success for India, eight veterans of the Indian Navy who were sentenced to death in Qatar were released by Doha on Monday. The national Indian men were arrested by Qatari authorities in August 2022. They faced espionage charges in March 2023 the eight Indians who worked for Dhara Global Technologies and consultancy services were handed the death penalty. At that time New Delhi expressed shock over the verdict and Qatar court decided to take back the death sentences. They were imprisoned in Qatar because of allegedly spying on a submarine program.
On Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs released an official statement stating that the Indian government has released eight Indian nationals who were working for Dharna Global Company and were detained in Qatar. The Indian government appreciated the decision by the Amir of the State of Qatar. The Ministry of External Affairs described the judgment, stating that the appeal court of Qatar in the Dharna Global case has reduced the verdict.
During the COP28 summit in Dubai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. They discussed the multilateral partnership and well-being of the Indian community living in Qatar.
