Seven prison officials at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Jail have been suspended following an investigation into a viral photo and video that showed Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa receiving what appeared to be preferential treatment while in custody. The actor is currently detained in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case. The controversy erupted when a photograph surfaced online depicting Darshan in a relaxed posture, sitting on a chair, and holding a cigarette and coffee cup, while accompanied by three other individuals. Reports indicate that those seen with Darshan included Wilson Garden Naga, a known criminal, Nagaraj, the actor’s manager and co-accused, and Kulla Seena, another inmate. A video allegedly showing Darshan speaking via video call further fueled the controversy.
The incident has sparked significant outrage, with critics highlighting the apparent security lapse and preferential treatment Darshan seemed to receive. Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwar addressed the issue, stating, “The police went there and investigated. Based on a preliminary inquiry, they have found seven officers involved in this, and they have been suspended. Now we are investigating the matter further. It’s a serious security lapse.”
Kashinath S. Shivanagowdru, the father of the murder victim Renukaswamy, has voiced strong concerns, calling for a thorough investigation and the punishment of those responsible. He expressed his disbelief and frustration, saying, “Looking at the picture, I’m surprised to see him (Darshan) with others holding a cigarette and drinking tea. We doubt whether he is in jail or not. Jail should be a jail and should not become something else. He should be treated like other normal prisoners, but here it looks like he seems to be sitting in a resort.”
The photograph and video have drawn widespread criticism from the public, raising questions about the integrity of the prison system and the treatment of high-profile inmates. The Karnataka government is under pressure to ensure that justice is served and that such lapses in security and fairness are addressed effectively. The ongoing investigation will determine the full extent of the involvement of the suspended officials and the actions that will be taken to rectify the situation.
