According to information provided to the Telangana High Court on Friday by the Registrar General in compliance with court orders, there are over 115 criminal proceedings against MPs and MLAs that are pending at different stages. In order to guarantee a prompt resolution of the cases, the High Court sent instructions to the court assigned to hear the cases. A suo motu PIL concerning the monitoring of designated courts for issues involving MPs and MLAs to ensure early disposition was being considered by a division bench of the Telangana High Court, which was made up of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Tadakamalla Vinod Kumar.
Based on orders from the Supreme Court dated November 9 in “Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay and others v. Union of India,” the High Court filed the suo motu PIL. These orders directed all high courts to direct the designated courts to expedite the resolution of criminal cases filed against such elected members in their respective states. On November 24, the Chief Justice bench gave the High Court registry instructions to gather information about the status of every one of these criminal cases. In addition, the court ordered that information about the types of offenses reported against each member be submitted in the form of a status report. A compliance report was requested from the Registrar General, to be submitted by the next hearing date at the latest. The matter was postponed for a period of three months. In the meantime, the High Court dismissed the PIL and suo motu petition brought by former MP Harirama Jogaiah, who requested the prompt resolution of CBI charges against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
