On August 15, 2024, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy inaugurated the Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project (SRLIP) in Pusugudem village, Bhadradri Kothagudem district, coinciding with the 78th Independence Day celebrations. This significant initiative aims to enhance irrigation capabilities across the region by drawing 70.40 tmc of water from the Godavari River at the Dummugudem anicut.
During the inauguration, CM Reddy activated the second pump of the project, while Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Roads & Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy switched on the third and first pumps in Kamalapuram and B G Kothuru villages, respectively. The SRLIP is designed to irrigate approximately 6.74 lakh acres across Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, and Mahabubabad districts, with a new ayacut of 3.28 lakh acres and stabilization of 3.45 lakh acres under existing irrigation projects.
Originally initiated during the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government in 2016, the SRLIP is expected to be fully operational within two years. The project is a crucial step in addressing water scarcity issues in drought-prone areas of Telangana, significantly boosting agricultural productivity and supporting the local economy.
In addition to the irrigation project, the Telangana government also announced the successful implementation of a crop loan waiver program, which provides eligible farmers with up to ₹2 lakh in relief. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to support the agricultural community and enhance financial assistance for farmers.
The Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project is poised to transform the agricultural landscape of Telangana, ensuring a reliable water supply and fostering sustainable farming practices in the region. The government’s commitment to improving irrigation infrastructure reflects its dedication to the welfare of farmers and rural development.
