Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is reported to have chosen to postpone repealing the controversial GO 111, which was intended to reduce pollution in a 10-kilometer radius surrounding Osmansagar and Himayatsagar by limiting growth, after placing the Airport Metro route on the back burner. The government led by K. Chandrasekhar Rao had repealed the Government Order (GO) last year, but it had not implemented its replacement, Government Order 63, which talked about establishing guidelines for allowing land use changes from conservation zones to residential, commercial, or multipurpose areas and then approving structures.
The controversial GO 111, which was supposed to control growth and lower pollution in a 10-kilometer radius around Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, is said to have been shelved by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy in favor of delaying repeal. The government under K. Chandrasekhar Rao repealed the Government Order (GO) last year, but it did not put Government Order 63 into effect. Government Order 63 talked about creating rules for approving buildings and allowing land use changes from conservation zones to residential, commercial, or multipurpose areas.
At a recent review meeting, the Chief Minister questioned the rationale for pursuing the Metro Rail corridor along the Outer Ring Road between Raidurg and the Shamshabad airport. He categorically stated that the project would be a waste of money because a significant portion of the area is covered by GO 111, which restricts growth. In a casual discussion with reporters on Thursday, he restated the same points. In the hurried lead-up to the elections, Chandrasekhar Rao announced GO 11 in an apparent attempt to boost Hyderabad’s real estate market and win over voters in villages covered by GO 111. The BRS government had declared that it would take all necessary precautions to avoid polluting the lakes and that it would create a master plan before approving any activity in order to avoid legal action from environmentalists.
