YouTube may be preparing to launch a new and experimental feature that will allow users to write ‘notes’ below videos. This feature is expected to function similarly to the Community Notes feature on ‘X’.
With this tool, YouTube hopes to provide additional context to the existing material on its platform, such as informing users whether something is a parody or an old video taken out of context—a strategy to counteract disinformation.
In a blog post, the video-streaming company stated that the addition of notes intends to provide easy-to-understand context for videos.
The post read that, for example, this could include notes that clarify when a song is meant to be a parody, point out when a new version of a product being reviewed is available, or let viewers know when older footage is mistakenly portrayed as a current event.
The function is being launched as an experimental pilot project in English in the United States. Eligible contributors will receive an email invitation or notification via the Creator Studio to test it before it is generally distributed.
According to YouTube, users will see a new Add Note option below the video. They can then provide further information in the textbox and click Send. The note will be published anonymously and will not include the creator’s name.
