The Central Government signed a crucial agreement to acquire five lithium brine blocks for exploration and development with Argentina on Monday. According to sources, the MoU was signed between India’s Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) and Argentina’s Catamarca Minera y Energética Sociedad Del Estado (CAMYEN) for lithium exploration in Argentina.
However, the Catamarca Minera y Energética Sociedad Del Estado is a state-owned mining and energy company in the Argentine province of Catamarca. In fact, this is the first ever lithium exploration and mining project by a state-owned company. According to the MoU, KABIL will begin exploration and development of 5 lithium brine blocks: Cortadera-I, Cortadera-VII, Cortadera-VIII, Cateo-2022-01810132, and Cortadera-VI, which cover an area of about 15,703 hectares in the Catamarca province.
Meanwhile, the crucial project will help India’s necessary lithium supplies while developing lithium mining and downstream sectors in both countries. It is known that the most important use of lithium is in rechargeable batteries for mobile phones, laptops, digital cameras, and electric vehicles. Argentina has more than half of the world’s lithium reserves, along with Chile and Bolivia.
