Star wrestler Vinesh Phogat created history after becoming the first Indian woman to reach the final in the wrestling women’s 50 kg event at the Paris Olympics.
Interestingly, Phogat won three consecutive matches to reach the final of the 50 kg wrestling. Phogat is all set to face Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA in the final. In fact, she was also a medal contender at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Phogat, 29 years old, defeated the top seed and gold medal winner of Tokyo 2020, Yui Susaki of Japan, in her opening round. Vinesh got the better of former European champion Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarterfinals.
Phogat beat Pan American Games champion Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba in the semi-final match. Notably, she has the chance to become the first Indian wrestler and also the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in the Olympics if she beats the 6th-seeded Sarah.
