Rehan Ahmed dismissed Shreyas Iyer for 35 runs early in the second session, ending a 64-run partnership with KL Rahul and dealing a severe setback to India.
Then Jadeja, an all-rounder, stepped up to bat. Both men continued to combine aggression and caution with resilience to stave off the English attack, forging a strong alliance as India found themselves at 275/4.
